Situated in the Kingdom of Fife the palace was originally built as a hunting lodge for McDuff of Fife. But once it was bought by the Stewart monarchy in the 14th centaury it became well known as a royal retreat.
It was popular among all the Stewart kings and also Mary Queen of Scots up until James VI of Scotland took over as the King of England and he moved the royal court to London.
The Palace grounds are well maintained with tours available to see both in and around the Palace. Once there you will see some beautiful gardens and it is also home to the world’s oldest Tennis court built by James V in 1539.
