Glamis Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the angus area and it has been the family home of the Earls of Strathmore since 1372. It was made famous by Shakespeare as it was the setting for Macbeth and was where the murder of King Duncan was to have taken place.
The castle has had several alteration over the years with most of them taking place during the 18th century. During this period the grounds were landscaped and the East Wing was remodelled. The last alteration took place in 1910 with the creation of the Italian garden.
It has strong connections to the modern day royal family as it was the childhood home of The Queen Mother and also the birthplace of Princess Margaret.
The castle is in excellent condition and a full tour is possibly to view the many tapestries and works of art on display. You can also take a walk around the lovely landscaped gardens which surround the castle or enjoy a meal in the on site restaurant. The restaurant is situated in the old Castle Kitchens and you can enjoy some excellent fresh produce here. |
