Blair Castle

Blair Castle

Highlands and Islands
Blair Castle has been owned by the Earls and Dukes of Athol for over 700 years.  The first castle was built in 1269 by the Comyns of Badenoch but they were eviceted by the Athol’s and it has been owned by Athol’s ever since.  Although it has been rebuilt many times the Comyn tower has survived from the original castle.

It has seen its fair share of battles and has been occupied four times, the first of these coming in 1640 when the castle was taken by Cromwell in 1652 until 1660 during the wars of religion.  The Castle was also occupied during the Jacobite wars, by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 when he was heading south and it is also the last place where a siege took place in Britain which occurred during the 1745 uprising.

It has had its fair share of royal guests with Mary Queen of Scots staying there in 1564 and also Queen Victoria in 1882 and 1884.  Queen Victoria was so impressed with the bodyguards that she was assigned there that she commissioned regimental colours and to this day the Athol highlanders remain the only private army in Britain.
