Edinburgh Castle

St Andrews Castle

Kingdom of Fife
Situated in the Kingdom of Fife the palace was originally built as a hunting lodge for McDuff of Fife.  But once it was bought by the Stewart monarchy in the 14th centaury it became well known as a royal retreat.  It was popular among all the Stewart kings and also Mary Queen of Scots up until James VI of Scotland took over as the King of England and he moved the royal court to London.

The Palace grounds are well maintained with tours available to see both in and around the Palace.  Once there you will see some beautiful gardens and it is also home to the world’s oldest Tennis court built by James V in 1539.

How to get here

Bus Station
The castle is about a 20 minute walk away from St Andrews Square Bus Station, just head south onto princes street then turn left on over Waverley bridge and go straight onto the royal mile before taking a right and following the path all the way to the castle

It is around a 15 minute walk from the train station, take a left out of the station and follow the road onto the Royal Mile where you then take a right and follow the path up to the castle.
