Southern Upland Way
Boarders and South Scotland

The Southern Upland Way is the longest of the main walks in Scotland as it covers a total of over 200 Miles going from the west coast to the east coast in the borders region of Scotland.  If you were to do all of the walk on consecutive days it would take around 14-15 days, but many people break this down so you have three parts of 5 days.

The start of the walk is Portpatrick near Stranraer and the end is Cockburnspath, along the way there are plenty of sights and great towns to discover.  This is however Scotlands most challenging footpath so make sure you are well prepared and also have a reasonable level of fitness before you set off!

Some of the top attractions to look out for include the ruins of Sanquhar Castle and the magnificent Thirlestane Castle. There is also the home of Sir walter Scott in Abbotsford and the Historic Melrose Abbey which dates from the 12th centuary.

For those interested in Wildlife you will see a variety of different species along the route of the path.  From the standard sheep and cattle to Puffins and Red Deer not to mention the many species of Birds which Scotland has to offer.  There is a great opportunity to see much wildlife in its natural habitat along the walk but if you are a nature lover then also check out Mull of Galloway Nature Reserve.

Accommodation can be sparse in some of the smaller towns so it can sometimes be more advantageous to stay in the same B&B or Hotel for a few nights and either get a bus back or arrange transport back from your walk destination.  There are companies that provide vehicle support, email vehiclesupport@southernuplandway.com for more information.
