Perth is a well-positioned base for touring Scotland, situated midway between Scotland two major cities, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The city nested on the banks of the River Tay and it is often referred to as the "fair city after a reference in the Sir Walter Scott story Fair Maid of Perth. The city has excellent rail links to the rest of Scotland with daily direct services to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness, Stirling and Fife.
