| Aberdeen is situated in the north east of Scotland and it is often referred to as the "Granite City", a reference to the city's many granite buildings which were built from locally quarried materials from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900.
The city is the third largest in Scotland and its main industries include fishing and shipbuilding due to its coastal location and oil, which from its discovery in the North Sea in 1970s is now the main industry in Aberdeen.
The city like so many in Scotland has a rich history, during the wars of independence in the 13th centaury the city was under English rule until in 1308 Robert the Bruce destroyed the castle and subsequently retook the city.
Today the city is well known for its outstanding gardens and parks and it has won the Bloom in Britain award 10 times in recognition of this. There is also a long unspoiled sandy beach that offers many amusements and family entertainment, not to mention the countless attractions on offer in the town centre to entertain the potential tourist.
