| Aviemore is a popular tourist destination which is set amongst the cairngorm mountains in the highland region of Scotland. This area is well known for skiing, the Cairn Gorm ski resort is Britain's biggest skiing centre. The newly created Cairn Gorm Mountain Railway takes only a few minutes and can take 120 skiers, in the summer the journey takes longer to allow people a chance to enjoy the spectacular scenery.
For keen walkers this region is a popular destination, with four out of the five highest mountains in Scotland in the Cairn Gorm mountain range. There are a total of 13 mountains over 3,000 feet, ideal for keen "munro baggers", a munro being a mountain over 3,000ft.
The town is also on the Speyside Way route, a popular 65 miles long walk that follows the course of the River Spey.
