Glasgow and Clyde Valley
Ayr is situated in the south west of Scotland about 35 miles south of Glasgow, its population is just under 50,000 and it was nominated for city status during the Queens Golden Jubilee in 2002 losing out to Stirling.

Ayr's history starts from its creation in 1205 after a castle was built on the river in 1197. Robert the Bruce held the first Scottish parliament here after Scotland had gained their independence from England at Bannockburn in 1315.

Another famous figure of Scottish history that is associated with Ayr is Scotland most famous poet, Robert Burns. He was born in Ayr in 1759 and he went one to write famous poems such as Tam o Shanter and the popular song Auld Lang Syne.

In April and September Ayr Racecourse hosts the Grand National and Ayr Gold Cup respectively, two of Scotland's premier horse racing events. The town also has a football team called Ayr united, who were formed in 1879 and currently play in the Scottish football League.
