Aberdeen and Grampian
Ballater is a small town in an area of Aberdeenshire known as Royal Deeside, just east of the Cairngorm Mountains. The area Dates back to 1300 but did not become noticed until the 18th centaury when the water from the nearby Pannanich wells was said to be a cure for scrofula. The drinking water is still sold in the town to this day and remains popular.

It wasn't until the 19th centaury that Ballater become a popular tourist destination and a better known town. This was due to the purchasing of the nearby Balmoral Castle by the Queen and the building of a railway to access the castle.

The Queen would not allow a railway station at the castle and so the nearest station was built 8 miles away to ensure the queens could enjoy some privacy. This lead to the nearest station being at Ballater in 1866. The Queens arrival is still celebrated at the station to this day with wax figures displayed to commemorate the occasion.
