Borders and South Scotland
Dumfires has a bloody history mostly due to its geographical location, being close to the border between Scotland and England. In the many years of unrest between the two countries, Dumfries was constantly sacked, invaded or occupied by various English armies up until the treaty of Union in 1707 and subsequently more amicable relations between Scotland and England.

Dumfries has a string association with Scottish history, this is where Robert the Bruce met the "Red Comyn" in 1306. The Bruce subsequently killed Comyn in a struggle inside the Church of the Grey Friars, Comyn had been his rival for the Scottish crown and afterwards Robert the Bruce went on to become one of Scotland's greatest Kings.

Robert Burns, Scotland's most famous poet spent his last years of his life here before dying in 1796. Outside of Grey Friars church is a statue to commemorate him and you can visit the Robert Burns Centre in town to find out more about him.
