| Edinburgh has been the capitol city of Scotland since 1437 and it stands as one of Europe’s top holiday destinations with some unique architecture and plenty of history. This is the second largest city in Scotland and it is home to the Scottish parliament of the devolved Scottish government since 2004.
Prior to the act of union in 1707 Edinburgh and Hollyrood where the centre of Scottish politics and has been central to many of Scotland’s major events. During the 16th centaury Edinburgh was home to Mary Queen of Scots, she stayed here with her second husband before his death at Hollyrood palace in the centre of the city. The city saw much turmoil as indeed did much of the country during the period with religious and political unrest.
Edinburgh has some fantastic events; these include the Fringe Festival which runs through the summer. This is the world’s largest arts festival encouraging acts from all around the world. The festival has run from 1947 and it has grown from a small group of theatre acts to being a well organised arts festival with many up and coming comedians and acts performing.
Another event associated with Edinburgh is Hogmanay (New Years Eve) which attracts around 250,000 people every year for a street party in the heart of the city. It is known as one of the best places in Europe and indeed the world for celebrating New Year, after all nobody throws a party better than the Scots. |
