Air
There is no airport in Dunfermline but Edinburgh International airport is only 15 miles away.  From the airport you can catch a bus to either to St Andrews bus station or to Haymarket train station.  The X54 or the city link service will take you direct to James Street bus station in Dunfermline and it will take between 40-60 minutes.  If you are travelling by train then a direct service runs from Haymarket to Dunfermline train station and the journey time is less than an hour.

Taxi
A taxi from Edinburh airport will cost around £35-40 one way to the city centre.

Train
There are two train stations in Dunfermline, Dunfermline Town, which is located in the centre of the town, and Dunfermline Queen Margaret, which is located in the northeast of town, near Queen Margaret Hospital.  You can easily arrive at either station, although is you are doing sightseeing the Dunfermline Town station is perhaps the best.

 

The town centre is quite compact and most of the shops and attractions are best discovered on foot.  The high street is pedestrianised so walking is a necessity for exploring the shops.  There are buses available to take you out with the city centre, the main bus station is located outside the Kingsgate Centre on the north side of town.

 

Dunfermline Palace & Abbey
The final resting place of perhaps Scotland’s most famous king Robert the Bruce, this stunning 12th century abbey is well worth a visit.  Guided tours are available throughout the day of the palace and the abbey.

Admission : £3.50, Child £1.75

Open Daily : 9.30am – 5.30pm (Winter closes at 4.30pm Oct-Mar)

Abbot House
One of Scotland’s more distinctive buildings due to its pink walls, Abbot House is steeped in history.  It has been an abbots home, laird mansion, iron foundry and an art school and it is now an award wining heritage centre telling the story of more than 1,000 years of Scotland’s history.

Admission : £4 (Accompanied kids under 16 go free)

Open Daily : 10am – 5pm (winter closes at 4pm Nov-Feb)

Knockhill Racing Circuit
About a 15 minute drive away from Dunfermline, if you want something exciting and you like racing this is the place to be.  There is usually always some kind of racing event from Superbikes to Rally cars to see, check their website for details.

Admission : Varies depending on events from £10-15 for Adults, £6-10 for Children

 

There are no backpackers in Dunfermline but there is some low cost accommodation available.  There is a low cost hotel option available at the Pitbauchlie House Hotel which is less than a mile from Dunfermline town centre.  It has its own private gardens and wooded grounds and 24 hour room service.  Rates £60-118 per room.

For some nice 4 star accommodation try the Keavil House Hotel which has an award winning restaurant and a health club with spa.  It is pricey at £120 per night with a full Scottish breakfast included in the price.

 

Eating

For some good traditional pub grub try out The Old Inn Carnock, it has a well priced menu and friendly staff. 

Fairways at The Pitfirrane Hotel offers good Scottish food and is just under 2 miles from the town centre.

For some fine dining try out the Cardoon Restaurant at Keavil house hotel, here you will find a varied menu with some good traditional Scottish produced included. Three courses start from £25.

The main indoor shopping centre is King's Gate Shopping Centre which is next to the bus station and is in the process of a major renovation.  For the rest of your shopping there is the pedestrianised high street with the usual brands such as Boots, HMV and Virgin.

Offering a wide range of drinks in an excellent location across from the Abbey.

The Watering Hole (123 New Row)
has a beer garden and is ideal for a drink on a sunny day.  There are also bar lunches which offer soup and a main course for only £5.  There is an open mic night on a Wednesday.
